In years to come I expect they will write a new chapter in Game of Thrones – the reinstatement of Scotland as an independent nation.
Of course, what people are really interested in is the intrigue that preceded the event and we are living this in real-time, as I write.
On the last full day before the historic Independence Referendum on 18th September 2014 when Scotland becomes a Sovereign nation for the first time since 1707 the question is simply this …
will Scotland remain a Sovereign Nation on the 19th September 2014?
The 18th September is effectively ‘D Day’ for Scotland, Decision Day.
We have heard the rhetoric. We have been bombarded with cliches. We have measured up to the treachery.
For me the referendum was supposed to be like a game of chess. Either side lays out their pieces and confront each other with their intellectual, commercial and ideological arguments. That is the way the YES Campaign approached the debate. Let’s call them the ‘whites’. As they await the set up of the black pieces they realise history is repeating and there is an attempted trickery.
The NO Campaign or Better Together BT realised they could not win the chess game so they had a huddle and came up with the sort of strategy they had used to build the Empire. Westminster of course is synonymous with Better Together and saw the referendum as the greatest threat they had faced since 1939. Clearly, this was not a debate, BT saw this as a war and when you go into battle you make sure you have the best weapons.
Accordingly, the NO Campaign hatched a devilish plan. Let the games begin…
After the YES Campaign set out their pieces on the chess board they looked across at their opponents. No pieces were in sight? Strange! All they could see was 3 giant balls {not including Ed} in the distance. In fact, the chess board was in a long alley? Suddenly it all became clear!
The YES Campaign, as agreed, were playing chess but the NO campaign had resorted to treachery and turned up to play bowls.
As we got underway the first bowl came thundering down the alley scattering pawns, a knight and a bishop before it. We set the pieces back up quickly just in time for the next bowl to come hurtling down the alley. And so it want on, and on.
Our pieces were defined in the White Paper. The bowls were; currency union, Trident, the EU, the NHS, businesses leaving, interest rate rises, pensions.
Like naughty schoolboys (private of course) the NOs kept the bowls hurtling at the YESs chess pieces. With every strike the pieces went flying but without fuss they were relentlessly set up ready for the next onslaught.
But the NOs made one fatal error. The spectators, the people of Scotland, or at least the smart and the decent ones could spot this treachery a mile away. The more the people saw, the more the chess men took the high ground, the more the alley rose up until gravity prevented the bowls from reaching. This had two effects. First of all the chessmen were safe and out of reach of the bowls. Secondly the bowls came hurtling back to the NOs and SCATTERED THEM ASUNDER.
On a day in September, the 18th …
BULLSHIT STOPPED BAFFLING BRAINS.
I intended to do [another] piece on democracy. I wanted to repeat again that when opposing views are outnumbered by 11 to 1 democracy will let you down every time. But this is all I want to say …
Democracy is just a numbers game. On the 18th September 2014 we must play the numbers game because that is the task we have been set. But after that I want to see a different society in Scotland.
One of the most glorious times in Scottish History (which didn’t actually begin in 2011) was the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th Century [read about it]. Lucky 18 you might say. Scotland was the intellectual powerhouse of Europe and possibly the world. This had nothing to do with democracy. This happened because Scotland was a Meritocracy by default. In the 21st Century I want to see a New Scottish Enlightenment, this time an Enlightenment of the People.
Democracy is just about numbers. In the UK Union numbers have always been our downfall. This was always a game we could never win. In a Meritocracy, numbers don’t count (not another pun?). What matters is intellect, brains, smarts, called it what you will, we all know what it is. Its what tilted the bowling alley!
And when the say we’re;
TOO WEE, TOO POOR AND TOO STUPID
On the 19th September 2014 Scotland will shout from the hills …
WE’RE BIG ENOUGH …WE’RE RICH ENOUGH … AND BY GOD, WE’RE CLEVER ENOUGH!
… AND ALL IT TOOK WAS A SIMPLE YES
